I've entered the Austin Map Project in Google's Summer of Code competition: http://code.google.com/summerofcode.html.

I've purchased hosting at DreamHost, as well as a unique domain for the site, austinmap.org. It'll take a few days for me to explore the host, and then another few days to transfer the site over, at which point any queries to ari.hfront.us/austinproject will be automatically forwarded to the new domain. Best of all, this should dramatically increase the response speed of the site.

The site is now on its own domain, austinmap.org . The speed is dramatically better. The only major thing that needs to be fixed is the jerky Java applet inerface, which will take me quite some time. Other than that, all that's left is the addition of a lot of new (but I think necessary) features, and the streamlining of the site's style and so on.

I submitted the site to News 8 Austin web sightings a couple weeks ago and sort of forgot about it. I noticed a big jump in site traffic today, and so I checked, and sure enough, it was their featured site today:

http://www.news8austin.com/content/living/web_sightings/

They didn't notify me so I haven't seen it on TV. I've got my tuner recording and I'll leave it going for a few hours. Hopefully I can get a clip of them showing it. Big news! Interestingly, despite getting a spot on TV, this has only yielded a couple new users and no new pictures. Maybe it'll take a while to have effect, but I'm still pleased. Obviously sending message to people on pbase is a more effectively targeted method, but TV... awesome.

I managed to capture the Map Project spot on News 8 Austin (see post above this one) with my tuner card. The quality's not great, but it works. Video codecs are completely nonstandard, so this may not work on your computer. If not, I recommend getting VLC player ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ). This is an MPEG, so it should work on most computers.

The site passed 20,000 picture views this morning. I didn't get a screenshot before it surpassed 20,000, but I figured this was worthy of noting. Merry Christmas.
